ObjectiveTo investigate the behavior, knowledge, health belief and self-efficacy of middle-aged and elderly people in communities on the prevention of osteoporosis. Use self-efficiency theory to do health education for intervention group and common health education mode for control group,in order to check out if the self-efficiency theory is better than the common health education mode.To provide scientific basis in order to improve the OP health education effect.MethodUsing experimental research method, We obtained 99 people aboved 50 years old in two communities of Dong changfu District, Liaocheng City by convenience extraction method, carried on the questionnaire survey from May to December in 2009. The research objects were grouped into control group (46 individuals) and intervention group (53 individuals) by their living area. Control group was given health education manuals and a lecture about osteoporosis. Besides these, the intervention group was provided community common diseases of elderly nursing series. And they were given a health lecture of osteoporosis every month.,their families were also encouraged to participate in jointly. After 6 months, the osteoporosis relative knowledge, health belief, self-efficacy and preventive behavior were investigated. Statistical analysis was carried out by using the independent sample t-test,matched t-test for intra-group and variance analysis.ResultsThis research investigated 99 individuals which showed the following results:1.About 40.4% was sedentary and 47.5% did not take bean products, only 24.2% drinked milk.,57.6% calcium deficiency and 33.3% vitamin deficiency.2.Baseline survey results showed:The average score of self-efficacy was 65.97,the workers'was 73.21,the cadres'was 67.33 and the farmers'was 60.66;The research objects aboved high school degree was 71.16 and the primary school level was only 58.35;The self-efficacy score was 57.65 for thobjects who known nothing about OP and 83.41 for them who known a lot about OP. 3.The OP prevention relevant knowledge score of the control group was 11.45 before health education and 14.11 after; The self-efficacy scale score was 56.95 and 62.14.The differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).The health beliefs score was 131.65 and 133.65, it was not statistically significant (P>0.05). The OP prevention relevant knowledge score of the intervention group was 11.70 before and 16.94 after; The health beliefs score was 126.68 and 133.60;The self-efficacy scale score was 59.54 and 69.29.All the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).4.The comparison results between the control group and the intervention group after the intervention showed that there was significant difference on self-efficacy (p<0.05); but there was no significant difference on health belief (p>0.05);The osteoporosis related knowledge was statistically significant (P<0.05) in OP risk factors (female),sport knowledge and calcium knowledge aspects. The intervention group is significantly higher than the control group.Conclusion1.The basic behavior habits of the objects were fairly good, some of them were sedentary, inadequate intake of milk and calcium. There were several aspects which can influence the OP prevention knowledge acquisition such as different degrees of education, various professions and source of finance.2.The self-efficacy of research objects had significant difference among various profession, culture, knowledge and source of finance (p<0.05).3.The objects lacked the OP related knowledge, especially in the OP risk factors prevention, athletic intensity and calcium intake knowledge. Strengthening the relevant knowledge, enhancing health beliefs was the key in future health education.4.Supplying health education for objects can improve their OP prevention behaviors, OP relevant knowledge and self-efficacy level. The health education effects in the basis of fully enhanced their self-confidence was better using the self-efficiency theory education mode in this research than the common health education mode.
