Objective The aim of this study is to describe medical students' knowledge, attitudes and willingness to take care of people living with HIV/AIDS(PLWHA);to explore the affected factors of medical students' knowledge, attitudes, behavior towards PLWHA and relationships between them; to analyze the effect of changing medical students' knowledge, attitudes and behavior towards PLWHA by participatory training. Methods On a cross-sectional study,Choose 200 medical students from some medical university in Hunan province randomly, using questionnaire to measure medical students'knowledge, attitudes and behavior about PLWHA.Under the informed consent, enroll 80 volunteers and devide into experimental and control groups randomly, and the horizontal baseline is in the same level. For medical students in the experimental group, they learned about knowledge and attitudes towards PLWHA by participatory training. The control team was set with no intervention and only getting information in traditional way. The knowledge, attitudes and willingness of taking care of AIDS was collected with questionnaire pre-test and pro-test.The main research tools are questionnaires about demographic data designing by author;knowledge of AIDS, attitudes of AIDS, Using one entry to let medical students choose one number from one to ten to describe their willingness of taking care of PLWHA. All data were analyzed with SPSS 18.0. The statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, t test, Kruskal-Wallis H,one-factor analysis of variance, Spearman correlation analysis and Repeated measures analysis of wariance. Results 1.The score of medical students'knowledge about AIDS was 16.54±2.61,they kewn about the transmission routes well, but they were not sure about some routes which are not infected.2. The score of medical students'discriminate about AIDS was 50.48±9.44, which was in the moderate level.3. The score of medical students'willingness to take care of AIDS was7.06±2.43.4. Participating in AIDS training can improve medical students' knowledge about AIDS,students in high grade had more discrimination about AIDS and less willingness to take care about AIDS than students in low grade.5. Correlative analysis shows that there was a negative correlation between medical students'knowledge and discriminatory attitudes about AIDS,there was also a negative correlation between medical students' discriminatory attitudes and willingness to take care about AIDS.There was a positive correlation between medical students'knowledge and willingness to take care about AIDS.6. By t test/Kruskal-Wallis H,after training, scores of medical students'knowledge, attitudes and willingness to take care of PLWHA were of statistical significance between two groups(P<0.001). Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that the main effects of intervention on medical students, knowledge, attitudes and willingness to take care of PLWHA was significant(P<0.01).The main effects of time on medical students'knowledge, attitudes about AIDS was significantly (P<0.01),and the main effect of time on medical students'willingness to take care of PLWHA was not significant. There were significant interactions between time and intervention on students'knowledge, attitudes and willingness to take care of PLWHA.Intervention diagram indicated that the decreased degree of medical students'knowledge about AIDS was higher in intervention group than of control group over time in 1-year intervention;with time going, medical students in intervention group got higher sore of AIDS knowledge and got more willingness to take care of PLWHA,but it is on the contrary in the contral group. Conclusion 1. Most medical students know clearly about the main transmission routes about HIV,but they are not sure about the routes which are not infected, fearing of getting infected is the important reason of their discrimination about PLWHA.2. The level of medical students'discrimination towards PLWHA is moderate, even they know it is not right to discriminate AIDS,they choose not to touch with them. PLWHA who get infected by using drug or from sexual way are more repelled.3. Participate in AIDS training can improve medical students' knowledge about AIDS,so in medical universities we can hold lots of activities to propagate knowledge about AIDS by students association. Medical students in high grade have more discrimination towards AIDS and less willingness to take care of AIDS than students in low grade.4. Participatory Training of AIDS Anti-discrimination Education for Medical Students can improve medical students'knowledge about AIDS, and decrease their discrimination towards PLWHA,enhance their willingness to take care of AIDS.
