According to the experimental results, combining existed wood science knowledge and collected information, and using the research theories in the area of natural beauty, esthetic feeling and esthetics, pattern formal beauty and other fields for reference, this paper has made comprehensive and systematical study and analyses on the esthetic principle of wood anatomy features, and tried to propose some opinions on wood esthetics theory and its developing prospect. The main contents of this paper are as follows:①Firstly, permanent slides aiming at some representative wood anatomical features were prepared through the experiment including a series of steps, which consist of specimen collection, specimen fabrication, specimen treatment, specimen sectioning, and wood section staining, dewatering and sealing. Then, by using the biological photomicrography system, these wood sections were analyzed from the perspective of wood esthetics, minute structure images were taken, and finally patterns with representative wood structural features were obtained.②Applying the basic theory of wood science and common esthetics, the esthetic principles of main wood tissues were analyzed according to the theory of pattern formal beauty, which include vessel, wood fiber, longitudinal parenchyma, wood ray, tracheid and extractives, in order to realize and reveal the beauty of wood anatomical features from the aspects of esthetics principle, and further excavate and enrich the basic theories of wood esthetics.③Based on the study results achieved, discussions upon the research theory of wood esthetics were carried out preliminarily, and some suggestions on the definition of wood esthetics and its research objects, methods and development directions were put forward in order to provide a necessary foundation for the later development of wood esthetics.Through a deep study and analysis on the above contents, main results achieved are as follows:①Wood anatomical features can be described by three basic visual elements, which are point, line and surface. The appearances of wood axial elements in cross section and wood radial elements in tangential section could be interpreted as point. The appearances of wood axial elements in radial section and tangential section, and those of wood radial elements in cross section and radial section could be interpreted as line. A section of wood surface or the permutation and combination of wood elements with larger area could be interpreted as surface.②After a comprehensive analyses upon the typical anatomical structure of wood with the five basic rules of pattern formal beauty, i.e., "variety and unity", "symmetry and equilibrium", "rhythm and rhyme", "dynamic and static", and "contrast and harmony", it was found that:The esthetics rule "variety and unity" could be exhibited well by wood structural features, such as diffuse-porous wood, uni-seriate ray, multi-seriate ray, oak-type ray, earlywood to latewood transition, and spiral check in tracheid cell wall. The esthetics rule "symmetry and equilibrium" could be exhibited well by wood structural features, such as tangential-porous wood, pores netted or crossed arrangement, aggregated ray, and storied structure. The esthetics rule "rhythm and rhyme" could be exhibited well by wood structural features, such as semi-ring porous wood, pores oblique and tangential arrangement, spindle wood ray, and spiral thickening in tracheid cell wall. The esthetics rule "dynamic and static" could be exhibited well by wood structural features, such as intervessel alternation pitting, multiple pores, diffuse-porous wood, longitudinal parenchyma diffused, longitudinal parenchyma paratracheal, and aggregated ray. The esthetics rule "contrast and harmony" could be exhibited well by wood structural features, such as ring porous wood, diffuse-porous wood, gelatinous fiber, and tylosis other.③The results showed that, the same wood anatomy feature could be accordance with various basic esthetics rules. For example, longitudinal parenchyma broad-banded not only had the esthetic effect of dynamic and rhyme, but also formed a relationship with neighboring tissues showing a contrast and harmonious effect. In addition, the same basic esthetics rule could be reflected in different kinds of wood anatomy features. For example, the esthetics rule "rhythm and rhyme" was interpreted well by both semi-ring porous wood and spiral thickening in tracheid cell wall.Through exploiting and studying wood esthetics, wood could be endowed with profound cultural connotations. A comprehensive understanding of wood in the aspects of esthetic, economy, science, ethics, religion, etc., would have a positive influence on the developing process of mankind.
