The design of A-class surface is a combination of art and engineering. It is not only an expression of the automobile style artistically, but also the carrier of the automobile engineering. It's really an important work to design the A-class surfaces during a new car development. Traditionally, the fairing of the curves and surfaces is the only criteria for the quality of the surface, while the character of being a link between artistic and engineering has been passed over. In this paper, a thorough evaluating system is discussed to evaluate the quality of a surface both from the artistic and the engineering.In First section, we contrast several methods of evaluating a surface in common use, make a general introduce of the whole paper and the software used—ICEM Surface and Autodesk Showcase.Second, we study the basic curves and surfaces needed when evaluating A-class surfaces, and contrast the fairing of different curves and surfaces. This will be a base to build a new evaluating system on.Third, we detailly discuss and build the system from the balance of the artistic and engineering. Ranging from the intent of the style, the type of the surface, the fairing character, the integration, the appearance of the connectors to engineering feasibility, performance in use, and verifying the model, we make clear all the characters that a nice surface should have. The thorough evaluating system we needed comes out then.Finally, we give an example of the application of this system. We evaluate the surfaces of some automobiles, both outside and inside, find the bad ones and redesign them. This system is proved effective and accurate for wide use. |
