Energy storage can offer various regulating actions in electric power system. The penetration of expanding large-scale renewable energy sources into power grid also requires energy storage to realize the stable power transmission. Because of the more and more application of energy storage, it is considerably significant to study the energy storage in depth.This paper gives an introduction of grid-scale energy storage at first. The function of grid-scale energy storage in power system and different technologies of energy storage are summarized respectively. The concept of energy storage power station is proposed subsequently, which is based on the battery energy storage technology. The energy storage power station and all of its components are analyzed in detail.Because energy storage power station with high capacity reaches megawatt, connects to the high voltage level, and is restricted by the capacity of battery energy storage unit consisting of the energy storage battery and bidirectional power conversion system, collector system is required to connect the battery energy storage unit to form larger energy storage power station. Four kinds of collector system of energy storage power station are proposed in this paper, which is based on the reference to the research findings of wind power plant's collector system.Based on the current power system reliability assessment and wind power plant's collector system, eight reliability indexes which are suited to assess the energy storage power station such as energy storage energy loss expectation are presented in this paper. The reliability of energy storage power station with different collector system is assessed and the reliability assessment of energy storage power station is analyzed through a computational example.The basic components, transmission mode and protocol content of Ethernet Passive Optical Network communication technology are described in this paper. The protection communication system of energy storage power station based on EPON is put forward and corresponding configuration of communication system is analyzed. At last, the related logical nodes of energy storage power station are expanded according to IEC 61850 standards.
