In electric power system, reactive power is an important factor, and it is also related to secure and steady operation of the electric power system. Inductive load equipment in the whole electricity consumption accounts for more than two-thirds. Obviously, providing reactive power for inductive load equipment is important for reducing line loss or capacity of power supply equipment, and improving the power system's power factor or voltage. Fix shunt capacitor in the power network can reduce flow of reactive power, thereby reduce transmission loss. Based on the principle of reactive power compensation, a low voltage reactive power compensation devise has been designed.This paper introduced the principle and objective of reactive power compensation, and presented the developmental actuality and trend of reactive power compensation system. The paper mainly includes the followed parts:the principle of the TSC, the control method and principle of reactive power compensation device and the hardware and software design of the device. In hardware design, TMS320LF2407A DSP is used in the controller. The thyristor is adopted as switch to connect capacitors to main circuit, which actualizes the capacitor's speediness, no arc, no impact switching, and has superior performance. The C and assemble languages are both used in the software design, and the method of modularization is used which can improve the universal trait of the program and simplify the device's maintenance.Key technology of the paper includes the followed parts:A zero triggered circuit is used to restrict the inrush current. A new capacitors (vacuum technology+resin enclosure) are used for more safety. It has the function of restraining harmonic. The compound criterion whose main criterion is reactive power and whose assistant criterion is voltage, was applied in the device, avoids oscillation on the condition of light loading.
