The ultimate objective of ammunition is to damage enemy targets. Fragment lethality is a very important type of the damage. The kinetic energy of fragments is the main parameter to assess the damage efficiency, and needed to be tested in development and production of weapons. At present, the velocity measurement of fragments is mainly measured all over the word. It is not found an effective way of both velocity and quality measurement in a lot of measuring methods of fragments. Therefore, there is an urgent need to study the theories and methods of the quality measurement of fragments to achieve the kinetic energy of fragments, and enhancing national weapons testing technology in this field, so as to promote the development efficiency of the efficient damage ammunition.Firstly, the overall measurement program of kinetic energy of the fragment is proposed. The screens is used to measure the velocity of the flying fragment in the method, and the volume information is got by mean of the output waveform of the fragment going through the screen, further the quality and the kinetic energy of the fragment are achieved. The one-dimensional screen measurement method and two-dimensional screen measurement method are presented for the rotational symmetry fragment and the non-rotational symmetry fragment respectively. Then, a theoretical model of the relationship between the output waveform of the one-dimensional screen and the volume of three typical shapes of the rotational symmetry fragments is proposed, and a simulation is studied on the Matlab platform.Secondly, a theoretical model of the relationship between the output waveform of the two-dimensional screen and the volume of two typical shapes of the non-rotational symmetry fragments is proposed, and a simulation is studied on the Matlab platform. Since the kinetic energy of the fragment is studied on the basis of the parallel light screen, taking into account the non-parallel light screen will introduce errors on the measurement results, so it is analyzed and simulated in this paper. Thirdly, the fragment going through the screen at an angle is analyzed, and the volume formula of the fragment in this case is derived. A calibrating method of the flying object volume measurement is studied in this paper.Finally, according to the proposed theoretical model, the test of the ball firing is done using the spherical steel ball and the bullet in the laboratory, and the error of testing results is analyzed. The testing result of the ball firing and the simulating result have proved that the proposed method can measure the kinetic energy of the rotational symmetry fragment and some rule non-rotational symmetry fragment. The measurement error is smaller than 1.5%, and the measurement precision satisfies the requirement of the range test.
