Due to the rapid changes in market demand, shorting the production cycle will inevitably become a popular trend. Product quality and market reaction speed have become a key factor in determining success. Therefore, the proposed time-based competitive strategy to cope with rapid changes in market demand is very useful. The product design is particularly important, and good design can reduce product quality caused by the variations due to design reasons. Also it can reduce the probability of occurrence in the period of production. And ultimately it can short product life cycle.The manufacturing process is the stage of producing product quality variations. So we should control the factors that cause variations at the design stage. The multi-stage assembly process of complex products is the object of this paper. Firstly, the characteristics of multi-stage process are described, and dig out the source of a variety of quality variations in the multi-stage process. Subsequently, the paper determines a clear mathematical relationship between the product and manufacturing system on the basis of the analysis. And it also gets a detailed model of the variation model. We apply the model in a product's assembly process to calculate the data, and get the state space model. On the basis of the established model, we use the sensitivity evaluation indexes to evaluate the process design and select the program that has the minimum evaluation value. And it can determine the critical station and variation sources. Finally, we can use optimization algorithm to optimize the critical station's evaluation index value on the basis of the established model and sensitivity evaluation indexes. And that can optimize the design program.The design phase of the product is the first step of controlling variations. The study from the perspective of the quality can make the program to be improved and eliminate the problems in the design phase. Ultimately, it can make the production process smoother and make higher quality products.
