Total station and distance meter are both metering equipments, which according to China'Metreology Law must be periodic calibrated to ensure its validity in measurement and reliability in value transmission. Chinese standards JJG 703-2003 optical distance meter calibration standard and JJG 100-2003 total station electronic tacheometer calibration standard define the calibration standard and method for this kind of instrument which ought to be calibrated point to point on outdoor baseline. However there are three major problems of the outdoor baseline fields calibration. First, it is difficult to establish baseline fields as the urban land price is high. It is practically impossible to find an even and straight site which is larger than 1000 meters without natural barrier and disturbance from man or animals. Basically the seleted sites which satisfy the above conditions are certainly far away from urban ares. Such brings in enormous inconvenient to calibration, and wastes time, energy and power as well. Second, it is extremly difficult for the outdoor baseline fields to station on ground or piles, as well as for instrument and reflecting body to mount and align. The reason for this is not only two more personnel are required to operate, moreover often correct and reliable result cann't be obtained because of the misalignment. Third, weather plays an import role in the outdoor jobs because weather variation results in low efficiency in examination and difficulty for work quality improvement. Therefore, it is senseful and profound to develop an entire indoor great length standard equipment of such kind of instrument. First, this brings in a chance to discuss the feasibility of the actual utilization of the principle of light path reflection to measure the great length. Next, application of this equipment in measurement calibration can enhance calibration efficiency and examination quality directly. It makes the calibration and maintenance of standard device very convenient, and reduces the operation costs greatly. Simultaneously the urban lands are saved effectively, energy consumption and examination personnel's work intensity are reduced, and people foremost harmonious good work atmosphere is build accordingly. The development of this testing equipment will also produce considerable society and the economic bonus.The experiment indicated that using light path reflection principle to measure the great length is effective and feasible. It helps for baseline fields' establishment, and is commonly senseful and with certain reference value for similar development.
