With the continuous development of power industry, the power grid becomes larger and more complex. As an important power supply site, the substation plays an important role in the power grid. Substations are often built in remote areas and the workers are not always on duty in the substations. In order to ensure the safety of substations, it is required to monitor the electrical equipment and environment in the region of substations.The video monitoring system in traditional substations is limited by technology developments. It can only achieve the"four remote"functions in the scheduling automation, and it thus can not obtain on-site electrical equipment and environment conditions. Therefore, the traditional substations need some workers to be on duty. With the development of multimedia, communications and substation automation technologies, the"remote viewing"function is added on the basis of traditional"four remote"functions. The"remote viewing"function focuses on the real-time remote monitoring of electrical equipment and environment and can handing with the immergence. It can upgrade the safety and reliability of substations to some extent, and can realize the visual monitoring and scheduling, and make the dispatching, control and operation of power grid be safer and more reliable.Based on the above requirements, this paper has provided a design of integrated intelligent video monitoring system. The system has all video functions of the traditional video monitoring system, and it increases the access control, alarm, lighting intelligent control, environment monitoring and other functions. The design principle, basic characteristics and demand analysis are introduced in details, and then the overall system architecture, basic function of each sub-system, the software and hardware configuration are presented. Finally, the implementation of a regional substation intelligent monitoring system is described.The intelligent monitoring system of this paper has already been operating very well, and it is accordance with the requirements of the daily work of the substation.
