As the large-inclination belt conveyor has various advantages over the other handling practices, it is widely used in industry. Nowadays the maximum angle of the upward belt conveyor is exceeding 30°meanwhile the carrying ability exceeds 3000t/h. according to such conditions, when the belt conveyor loaded with great weight suddenly shut down for the power failure or some other reasons, the system might turn back and slip. Usually we adopt holdback to prevent the belt from slip. This paper gives a new method using an accessory equipment—backstop roller which undertakes part of the whole torque.Firstly the writer categorizes kinds of the existing backstop rollers, and then the paper introduces the constructure form and work principle of the new kind backstop idler and analyses its loading static loading characteristics. This paper also introduces the selection calculation of the key components such as bearings, springs etc in details. Finally the paper focuses on the sealing technology of the exsiting backstop rollers. With the finite-element simulation analysis (ANSYS), the writer analyzes the virtual prototype with dynamic simulation as the data showing the result is feasible.Backstop roller acting as an accessory equipment, has not been widely acquainted by so many people. There is also little mechanics analysis about the equipment. This paper fills up the domestic blank and also provides valuable reference for the designs and the project operations.
