Iran's history have a rich collection of architectural masterpieces such asTagh-i-Kasra from the Sassanid era(540AD) with the biggest vault built in that era. With the raid of Arabs about14centuries ago, Iranians that were Zoroastrians at the timeconverted to Islam. With this conversion both Iranian and Islamic architecture got influ-ences from each other. This paper will investigate the specific elements of architectural design values ac-cording to traditional Persian and Islamic cultural background. In the second part of the paper we will study traditional sustainable methods that localIranian architects have adapted to design sustainable buildings that are suitable for dif-ferent climatic areas of Iran such as hot and arid or mild and cold.In the modern world we are facing the energy crisis and even countries such as Iran withrich natural oil resources are threatened by the fact that someday the resources will befinished and we need to think of other methods to replace fossil fuelswith. We will investigate the possibility of adapting these achievements in modern Iranian ar-chitecture in order to reduce energy consumption and create more environmentallyfriendly buildings, something that we certainly have ignored since around100years agowhen first our natural oil resources were explored and we thought they would neverfinish.
