The ship waves in shallow water channel may cause many negative effects for inland water transportation, which bring more and more concern in the past years, such as damage to slope protection, navigational problems for ships exposed to wake waves, and damage to moored vessels, docks and piers. In this paper, the moving free-surface pressure zone was adopted to model the ship existence in the water channel. The modified Boussinesq equation was embedded into the open-source wave modeling package COULWAVE. The above numerical simulation approach was applied to several 2D-channel and 3D-channel cases, and the typical shallow water ship waves were obtained successfully. In 2D-channel calculations, the numerical results from the present model are compared with those obtained by the Boundary Integral Equation Method (BIEM) and forced KdV (fKdV) equation. In 3D-channel calculations, the results from the present model agree well with those obtained by Liu. In model test, the time history of free surface elevation at gauge point are investigated and compared with laboratory data by Kurata and numerical model results by Tanimoto. The validation results demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the adopted numerical model.
