CAD/CAPP technology is an important aspect for manufacturing informatization. With the rapid development and broad application of CAD, seamless and effective integration of CAD and CAPP is increasingly demanded, making parametric modeling and automatic feature recognition the hot topics in the field. In this paper, the secondary development based on Pro/E developing platform is studied to realize parametric modeling and automatic feature recognition.Firstly, parametric modeling theory is investigated by comparing several methods of modeling and the method in Pro/E feature modeling is provided. The developing tools for Pro/E are studied, especially Pro/Program, based on which parametric modeling process is built and applied to parametric design of involute cylindrical spur gear.Secondly, feature extraction approach is presented. After the study of the fundamental theories of feature extraction in Pro/E, especially the characteristic manufacturing information database, the approach for the transformation from the feature information to feature case is put forward. At the same time, the developing function and characteristics of Pro/Toolkit are deeply studied and the critical techniques of feature extraction are explored. The programming framework and working mode of Pro/Toolkit are combined to design the process for feature extraction. Finally, on the basis of the developing environment and interface between Pro/E and VS2008, application program for part feature extraction is established to basically achieve the extraction of technology size, tolerance feature and surface roughness, using the developing resources provided by Pro/Toolkit.
