As the development of portal crane that become bigger and bigger. The Single-Jib Portal Crane which use drum compensation derricking system replace the Four-bar of Derricking Portal Crane's leading position in the market.but at present,the studies on luffing mechanism for this kind crane is few, and we always use classic method to design it. This method of design efficiency is not high, most parameters or need to rely by experience, design quality also can't get effective guarantee.This article mainly researched single-jib portal crane which use drum compensation derricking system, analyzed the principle and characteristics of this system, introduced a simple drum compensation derricking system: put derricking and compensation rope in one drum, make it design and manufacture more simply. Proposed the key elements of design, emphasized that horizontality is not the only purpose. And used modern optimization design method, established the mathematical model , used matlab optimization tool complete the calculation, solved the practical engineering problems successfully.At last we compared the results between modern optimization design method and the classic design method, proved that the optimization process is correct and effective, this method can be directly applied to the design, and it will improve the design quality and efficiency of this kind crane.
