Centrifugal pump is widely used to cool the car engine in the automotive industry. The internal flow in a pump is very complicated due to the rotational impeller and the interaction between different components of the pump. Unlike general centrifugal pumps, the centrifugal car pumps are characterized with small volume size but high speed, which makes the internal flow in pumps more complicated. The current method used to design pumps still is dependently on semi-theory and semi-experience.In this paper, an in-depth research on the loss model of each component of pump is proposed based on hydraulic loss method. With the results of three-dimensional numerical simulation, the performance prediction model is put forward. The main research contents of this paper are as follows:(1)The present situations and trends on character prediction of centrifugal pumps are summarized. After analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of some main methods on characteristics prediction such as hydraulic loss, the numerical simulation and the neural network, a conclusion is drawn that hydraulic loss will be more proper method in the future.(2)Based on the hydraulic loss method and detailed analysis of the hydraulic model of centrifugal pump, the hydraulic loss model of each component of pump is proposed.(3)Since the design of blade in three-dimensional model software is so complicated, a parametric software is designed with Pro/E and VC++6.0. The typical blades of the centrifugal pumps are created by the parametric modeling function of Pro/E. Then the dynamic MFC that used to reset the parameters of blade is built, which transfers blade parameters to Pro/E. The software greatly simplifies the modeling process and improves the efficiency. (4)3D numerical simulation of internal turbulent flow for existing car pumps is got. Compared with experiment results, the results of numerical simulation is reliable. The hydraulic loss of each component of pumps is derived. With the numerical data, the hydraulic loss model and characteristic prediction model are set up, which provides the relations between inner flow characteristic parameters and external characteristic parameters such as efficiency, hydraulic head and so on.
