The masonry-infilled RC frames are used widely in practice, for their flexibility in layout and economical inherent. Seismic code of China takes into account the infills just through providing a reduction factor for the period of this kind of structures. However, up to now, the interaction mechanism between the infills and frames has not been understood clearly and completely for its complexity. The infills affect the seismic performance of the RC frames, and the frames also change the seismic performance of the infills. The infills'effect on the frames depends on the panels'failure mode which is caused by different mechanisms of force transmission. Assessing this role presents a challenge for structural engineers due to the variety and complexity of failure mechanisms and the lack of reliable methods to capture these mechanisms. Based on the finite element method which is one of the most powerful tools, the dissertation addresses the in-plane seismic performance and failure mode of the masonry-infilled RC frames with and without openings. The main contents are as follows:(1) Based on the ABAQUS finite element analysis platform, the separate finite element model for the study of the in-plane seismic performance and failure mode of the masonry-infilled RC frames is established and validated with the corresponding experiment data.(2) The seismic performance and failure mode of the masonry-infilled RC frames without openings are investigated with the proposed separate finite element model. The influences of the vertical load, the aspect ratio and H/T (height-to-thickness) ratio of the infills on the seismic performance of the structure are analyzed.(3) The seismic performance and failure mode of the masonry-infilled RC frames with openings are investigated with the proposed separate finite element model. The influences of opening configurations, opening locations and the size of window openings on the seismic performance of the structure are analyzed completely.
