Energy consumption in China is so high and the building energy consumption is an impo- rtant aspect, which accounts for about 30% of the total, so building energy saving has become an important part of National Strategies for Sustainable Development. With the implementati- on of the" Building Socialism New Country" policy, the rural economy in cold area has been largely improved and housing construction has developed rapidly. However, the increase of b- uilding area and the decrease of building costs are one-sided emphasized with energy saving being ignored, which results in the low level of insulation of building envelope and a vicious circle between high energy consumption and discomfort. Therefore, the energy consumption analysis and the energy saving way research are very important to reduce the energy consum- ption of rural housings. In this paper, with the help of infrared thermal imager and mercury thermometer, the sp- ecial rural housings in The Yangling Agricultural Hi-tech Industries Demonstration Zone and Yanchuan in Shaanxi Province are monitored and the thermodynamic disfigurement is analyz- ed. With FEM software ADINA, the main way of heat transfer and energy consumption are a- nalyzed for Cave Dwelling and Bungalow. In addition, seven kinds of exterior wall with diff- erent wall materials are compared, which helps to recommend the wall with the better insulat- ion. Finally, the application prospect of a new energy saving material—straw bale in rural housings is analyzed to explore a new type of rural residential energy saving way.The main research results of this paper are as follows:(1)With the help of infrared thermal imager and mercury thermometer, the temperature of the special rural housings in Yangling and Yanchuan is monitored and from the temperature distributions it can be seen: there is obvious temperature difference between normal positions and the positions with poor air tightness, air leakage and heat bridge etc., which is caused by the thermodynamic disfigurement, which can be quickly, distinctly identified and displayed. So it can be concluded that it is an effective way for effect test of energy saving by using infr- ared thermal imager. (2)From the temperature field simulations of Cave Dwelling and Bungalow with FEM s- oftware ADINA, it can be seen: the indoor temperature of Cave Dwelling is significantly hig- her than that of Bungalow under the same condition and exterior walls and windows are main ways of heat transfer between buildings and external environment.(3)From the temperature field simulations of seven kinds of exterior wall with different wall materials with FEM software ADINA, it can be seen: straw bale has the best thermal ins- ulation performance and in the real application blocks with low thermal conductivity (aerated concrete block etc.) should be selected in preference, secondly external insulation composite wall should be selected.(4)Straw-bale building is an energy-efficient building along with benefits of society, eco- nomy and environment and has good application prospects in the rural housings in Northwest China.
