Performance-based navigation (PBN) is a new navigation technology, that developed in international civil aviation community in rencent years. PBN combins advanced onboard equipment with advanced navigation technology, especially satellite-based navigation, to provide flight guidance for all phases of flight, which from departure to apporch. PBN is mainly based on navigation performance, and enables a safer and more accurate air transportation. PBN can provide important protection for aviation operation's safety, punctual, effcient and economic. Analyis and research of the performance of navigation system's performance and characteristics will provide more effective help for the operation of PBN and the air transport.PBN navigation metholds translate from the traditional ground-based navigation to satellite navigation, and the accuarcy, integrity, continuity and avaliability need much higher requirements. PBN navigation specification describes that, PBN operation method will be optional According to the coverage of navigation facilities in different regions and the different requirments. PBN is introduced in this thesis, and the performance and characteristics of different navigation systems are mainly analysised and researched, with the international trend of PBN and ralated technical documentations, as well as the PBN roadmap of china civil aviation. The navigation principle of groun-based navigation methods (such as VOR/DME, DME/DME) that used in PBN is introduced, traditional navigation error is simulated, and the characteristics of navigation is demonstrated in this thesis. Inertial navigation system is briefly introduced, but the satellite-based navigation—GNSS system, which is also used in PBN operation is mainly focused on. GNSS means Global Navigation Satellite System, consists of two core constellations of GPS and GLONASS, as well as their augmentation systems. GNSS is the primary navigation system used in PBN. The principle of GPS and navigation performance are primarily studied, other satellite constellations and augmentation systems are discussed briefly. Finally, the PBN navigation system performance monitoring is discussed in this thesis. The weighting HPL algorithm is used to analyze the performance of receiver autonomous integrity, it's use method and significance in PBN application are investigated. Normal distribution model is used to discuss and simulate FTE, which is one element of Total system error. The characteristics of FTE are analyzed, and the application of it in PBN is also discussed.
