With the rapid development of electrified railway, pantograph-catenary arc becomes growing problem and affects rail operations and development. From the power quality point of view, the arc resistance is nonlinear, which can be considered as a harmonic source will reduce the quality of power. Seriously, pantograph-catenary arc generated high harmonics will cause the over-voltage phenomenon in the pantograph-catenary system. The over-voltage may damage the insulation system on the locomotive. The arc full fills with free-state plasma. Its high energy and temperature can instantly make the metal surface melt and then vaporize. Under the effect of high temperature, metal ion will be generated. This phenomenon can damage pantograph and contact line. Therefore, more and more people pay attention to pantograph-catenary arc.The reason of generating pantograph-catenary arc is that due to pantograph contact wire separation caused the air between the electrodes conductive. In this paper, in the process of rise and drop pantograph, pantograph-catenary arc is studied. In order to reduce pantograph-catenary arc damage and restrain pantograph-catenary arc re-ignition, the characteristic of the pantograph-catenary arc is analyzed.By studying the basic theory of AC arc and theory of electrical contact arc, discuss the reason of the arc erosion and damage on contact line and pantograph.In the paper, Cassie model and Mayr model are analyzed. Through analysis arc voltage data, arc voltage model in the process rise and drop pantograph could be proposed. And the model parameters are calculated. Then SIMULINK will be used to make sure the model is correct.Through the simulation of the arc voltage model to study the characteristics of pantograph-catenary arc and the affected factors are analyzed. By constructing a simplified arc simulation circuit, pantograph-catenary arc on the impact of traction power supply system is analyzed.Through analyzing the physical process of the electrical arc re-ignite and extinguish, the methods, paralleling capacitor in voltage transformer high-pressure side or magnetic blowing, are proposed for arc suppression. And the methods are tested and verified by SIMULINK simulation tool.
