As an independent photovoltaic power generation system, solar powered streetlight, which is safe, environmental and energy saving, holds an important position in the application area of photovoltaic power generation. During the day with ample sunshine, photovoltaic batteries generate electricity, and charge the battery. At night, the battery discharge with providing electricity to the street lights. A typical solar streetlight system consists of a photovoltaic cell, a load,a controller and a battery, which is the most easily damaged. To some extent, whether a solar powered streetlight system is good or bad is determined by the battery. In order to protect the battery better and extent the battery life, this paper designed a solar streetlight charge-discharge controller based on single chip AT89S52 .During the day, in the effect of the controller, the photovoltaic cell charges the battery , and according to the battery voltage sampling values , control the charge and discharge mode automatically, and control the on-off of the charging circuit to prevent overcharging. At night the battery provide electricity to the lights, and control the discharge path of the on-off control to prevent over discharging. The main work of the paper is as follows:1. This paper introduces the effect of solar streetlight controller and the status of domestic and foreign research briefly, and analyses the advantages and disadvantages of the existing controller in the current market.2. This paper introduces the effect of energy storage of solar streetlight system and the basic requirements to energy storage. Study on the working principle and the charging and discharging characteristics of lead-acid batteries. This paper also describes factors which impact the life of the lead-acid battery in solar streetlight system, and make a detailed analysis and research on charge and discharge control method of lead-acid battery.3. Design the solar streetlight charge and discharge controller according to the battery's charge and discharge characteristics. This paper provides systematic hardware design project, and discusses hardware circuit design of every module including the power circuit, the voltage sampling circuit and display circuit. And write relevant software program in C programming language, with showing the program flow chart, and provide specific C language program code of the key modules of the controller.4. Lay out the PCB plot and finish the PCB board. After testing, everything is in good condition and achieves predefined goals basically.5. Summarize on the whole design and put forward the improvement project.
