The advancement of generator excitation control technology and the development of control theory are closely related. This theory is applied to model predictive control of synchronous generator excitation control design, the main research work and achievements are as follows: the excitation control system of generator in the role of the power system is introduced; the research productions in the excitation control of generator are introduced; the developments and actuality are summarized; the basic principles, characteristics of predictive control theory and the predictive control of nonlinear systems are Introduced; In this paper, two methods to achieve synchronous generator excitation control, first, using the classical Lyapunov method to linear the nonlinear model of synchronous generator, establishing the state-space model which have to meet the requirements of the MPC toolbox. and then using MPC toolbox simulation Second, a new nonlinear predictive control idea (The control strategy of segmented approximation) is proposed. By the revelation of using infinite polygon approaching to circle to calculate the area of circle, we also segmented the sample time correspondingly. As long as the Number of segments is enough, every segment only needing simple predict can getting an accurate prediction. Simulation results show that the both methods can achieve good control effect.
