"Tree of Architecture" has been regarded as typical evidence of the West's ignorance and prejudice to Chinese architecture, which is also the starting point of how the author is going to explore the way the West understand Chinese architecture. Based on the study of early western travel notes to China, the author chooses the work of Macartney embassy as typical cases to do a preliminary study of the mode the West understand Chinese architecture, beginning with the columns and roofs which are most characteristic in their descriptions of Chinese architecture. At the end, the author brings out some new knowledge and assessments to《A History of Architecture on the Comparative Method》from historical origin perspective.
