As the cheap substitutes of natural musks, synthetic musks are added incosmetics and detergents for the distinct flavor as well as their abilities toimprove the fixation of compounds and to round off fragrance compositions. However, with the deepening of the study on synthetic musks, researchersconfirmed the high durability, high bioaccumulation and potentialcarcinogenicity of these compounds. In recent years, the level of syntheticmusks in household products has caused more attention; countries all over theworld have issued relevant laws to limit the use of synthetic musks. In this paper, the research progress at home and abroad of synthetic muskwas analyzed. In addition, the suitable sample preparation method as well asGC-MS conditions for the detection of5synthetic musks in perfume andcream were established, in order to make up for the weakness in the currentapproaches. The HS-SPME was chosen as the proper sample pretreatment approachaccording to the results of the optimization experiments. In the optimizedconditions, the water-diluted samples(added0.04g perfume sample or0.05g cream sample) in a10mL headspace-via were equilibrated for3min, with themagnetically stirred speed of600r·min-1.Then the analytes were absorbed20min at60℃, using a65m PDMS-DVB fiber. After HS-SPME, the fiber wasimmediately inserted into the GC injector and desorbed at250℃for3min.Perfume sample spiked recovery (n=5) were ranged from82.0%to103.3%,while83.4%-94%for cream sample. The relative standard deviation (n=5) forthe recoveries were1.8%-9.4%and3.7%-7.6%respectively. It's meet therequirements for trace analysis. The conditions of GC-MS were also developed for simultaneousdetermination of5sythetic musks in both cosmetic samples, with which allthe compounds could be detected with a clear baseline separation. The methodprovides good linearity as the correlation coefficients (r) higher than0.9992inperfumes and higher than0.9995in creams for all analytes. The respectiveLODs(S/N=3) were0.6-2.1ng·g-1and1.7-4.2ng·g-1, while LOQs(S/N=10)were2.0-11.7ng·g-1and5.6-13.9ng·g-1.The established method is simple, effective, and environmental friendly.Itwas applied successfully to real cosmetic samples for the detection of5sythetic musks.
