In recent decades, with the development of functional ecology, people gradually carry out research on the relationship between plant functional traits and ecosystem function. The northeast of China maintains all the major forest types of the north of east-Asia, meanwhile, the arbor occupies a dominant position whether in terms of biomass or functioning in the forest system. This paper compared the functional traits of major tree species of the typical forest communities in Changbai Mountain area, it also gives a preliminary discussion of the relationship between plant functional traits and the capability of carbon sequestration of the tree species. The result showed that: The specific leaf area well reflects the canopy shade degrees of the locationwhere tree species stay in the community. On the whole, the leaf lignin content and the carbon and nitrogen ratio of the early successional tree species is lower than that of the latter successional species. but three pioneer species in the birch community clearly shows an opposition, maybe it's because the organic matter in leaves of the pioneer species is easy to be decomposed,and the sample is not processed in the best time. the data of the nitrogen and phosphorus shows that the growth of plants in the region are mostly restricted in the N element, some individuals of the latter successional species such as Quercus mongolica & Pinus koraiensis shows a co-limitation of N & P in specific community. Leaf dry matter content &twig dry matter content can reflect the growth status of certain tree species in a certain successional stage. Overall,the early successional tree species which grows faster shows a trend of having a lower stem density than that of the latter ones.On the whole,there is a obvious difference among the functional traits of pioneer tree species, middle & late successional tree species and typical late successional tree species; specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content and leaf lignin content shows a fairly good correlation with other functional traits.On the community scale, the key functional traits of the tree species in the community displayed a significant correlation with the volume of the trees, which is used to indicate the tree's capacity of carbon sequestration. The order of the significance of traits correlation: leaf specific aera>leaf lignin content>leaf dry matter content> leaf P content>C/N> leaf N content> twig dry matter content.Age, differences in local site conditions, the differences between different communities of the same species, incidencel and other factors may affect the calculation of community functional traits.
