In recent years, demand for alumina increasing. Therefore, alumina production process with the higher requirements. Red mud sedimentation is one of the key processes in alumina production. Due to the complexity of red mud, domestic flocculants can not meet the industrial demands, while imported ones are too expensive. Therefore, novel types of high quality flocculants with low cost are in need for the improvement of efficiency in red mud sedimentation. In this study, two new methods were designed to prepared a new flocculant containing hydroxamic acid group using inverse emulsion polymerization(IEP) which has many advantages such as excellent heat exchange, high efficiency etc. compared with conventional polymerization methods.(1) Acrylamide copolymerized with styrene sulfonate, in the aqueous solution of hydroxylamine sulfate was modified under the reaction;(2) Acrylamide monomer in the aqueous solution of hydroxylamine sulfate was modified under the reaction and then with the copolymerization of styrene sulfonate. Two new hydroxamic acid modified polymeric flocculants with benzene ring were synthesized, using acrylamide as the basic monomer, sodium styrene sulfonate as the functional monomer respectively, redox systemias initiator. And then, the polymer was modified by hydroxylamine sulfate.Polymerization were investigated and the process conditions modified. The sort and concentration of initiator, the concentration and molar ratio of monomers, concentration of surfactant, stirring speed, reacting temperature, reacting time and the concentration of EDTA were all studied, and some main factors were optimized. The products were characterized by using IR spectrum, UV spectrum and color reaction of FeC3, the results reveals that the product surely containe hydroxamic acid group. The molecular weight of flocculant has obvious effect on red mud sedimentation. The two new polymer flocculants were contrasted with each other for their properties, and with the imported and domestic flocculants used in the manufacturing site. It is demonstrated by the settling tests that the two new polymeric flocculants all take advantage in red mud sedimentation, and the analysis of economic benefit shows that they have promising market prospects.
