Aluminum titanate (Al2TiO5, AT for short) has been widely used in many technical fields, such as applications as high temperature anti-corrosion coating, high temperature oxidation-resistant coating and high temperature alloy thermal barrier coating; applications as refractory material, structural material in the steel, metal smelting and the automotive industry. Because it has many excellent characteristics, such as high melting point, low thermal expansion coefficient, low thermal conductivity, low elastic modulus and good thermal shock resistance et. al., Based on the excellent characteristics of AI2TiO5, it will be an ideal choice for porous ceramic substrate material which used in automobile exhaust purification.In this paper, porous ceramic material of aluminum titanate was synthesized by reaction sintering method by using Al2O3 and TiO2 as raw materials, SiO2 and Fe2O3, PVA, corn starch as modifier, binder and pore forming materials, respectively. The influences of sintering temperature, modifier and pore forming materials on the properties of aluminum titanate ceramics were investigated systemly. And the relationship between the composition, structure, morphology and properties of the porous material were investigated by using XRD, SEM and electron microprobe methods. The following conclusions can be draw from above study.(1) XRD analysis shows that the main phase obtained is Al2TiO5 and a small amount of unreacted Al2O3 and TiO2 under different sintering temperatures. With the increasing of sintering temperature and the import of modifiers, the yield of Al2TiO5 increased gradually, and there is no unreacted Al2O3 and TiO2 almost.(2) From the SEM morphology and EPMA analysis of samples sintered at different temperatures, we can find that Al2TiO5 grains are irregular in shape. But with the increasing of sintering temperature, the grains are enlarged, and bond between the grains is closer with less pores higher density and higher strength, The conclusion can be draw that the optimal sintering temperature may be 1500℃Additives and aluminum titanate solid solution are formed. which exists on the grain boundary of aluminum titanate so that it can change structures and properties of aluminum titanate, and then improving the thermal decomposition ratio and strength of aluminum titanate. The strength of aluminum titanate sintered at 1500℃is higher than that of 1400℃.(3) In the experiments, Aluminum titanate porous ceramic material with three-dimensional porous structure is obtained by reaction sintering method. A certain range (0% to 20%) of corn starch can effectively increase the porosity of aluminum titanate ceramics. Different content of pore forming agent have different effects on the properties of aluminum titanate, porosity increased with the increasing of the pore forming agent content, while the compressive strength of aluminum titanate is reduced with the increasing of pore foming agent.
