severe impact on ecological environment of coastal zone, which brings about degeneration of coastal zone ecosystem, exacerbation of marine environmental pollution and so on. Therefore, construction of artificial coast with ecological function can effectively reduce adverse effect produced by artificial coast. Based on this, the paper studied on mechanism of ecological function construction of artificial coast according to characteristics of artificial coast in Tianjin, which provides research foundation and technical support for demonstration project of ecological function construction in Tianjin and other regions. On the basis of determining ecological function construction target, ecosystem structure and ecosystem material recycling of artificial coast in Tianjin, three kinds of selected salt-tolerant plants were studied to determine their optimum salinity when growing in Tianjin. A rainwater collection simulator was independently designed, and the feasibility of rainwater collection scheme was discussed through operation and related experiments of the simulator. Three freshwater supplement schemes including solar-wind desalination, rainwater collection expansion and use of urban reclaimed water were compared and selected to obtain the optimal scheme. Finally, the reliability of ecological function construction scheme of artificial coast was discussed through establishment of water cycle model and analysis of water balance. The results showed that three kinds of salt-tolerant plants could adapt to the climate of Tianjin and were capable of bearing a certain degree of salinity, in which the tamarix chinensis had the best salt-tolerant. The combination of mulch plastic film and water-keep agent could significantly reduce water requirements of plants. Adopting the scheme of paving the soil in the upper and collecting water in the lower could effectively collect and use rainwater, and water saving irrigation was achieved by pipe drip irrigation. Rainwater collection expansion was the best scheme in the three freshwater supplement schemes. Only the freshwater obtained from rainwater collection couldn't meet the water requirements of plants, while extending 40 m of rainwater collection area in 200 m of demonstration project could meet the water requirements.
