The prerequisite and key for preparation of transparent laser ceramics is the synthesis process of the rare earth doped transparent laser ceramic powders. There has not been reported currently yet in the country about the research in both preparation of pure YbAG and erbium doped YbAG laser ceramic powder and spectral performance aspect.In this paper, laser ceramic powder was prepared by co-precipitation. The best preparation conditions of erbium doped YbAG laser ceramic powder was discussed via the change of pH, calcination time and temperature of the precursor. The structure, composition and spectrum performance of the obtained powers were characterized by XRD, FTIR, absorption spectra, fluorescence spectrum, etc.The results show that the pure phase YbAG and erbium doped YbAG powders can be obtained at 800℃by co-precipitation. Best preparation conditions of ammonia method for erbium doped YbAG powders:pH=7-8, calcined 2 hours at 1000℃; Carbonate method for erbium doped YbAG powders:pH=8-9, calcined 2 hours at 1000℃.
