Nowadays, the competition in the metal sheet machine tool industry is becoming fiercer. More and more corporations strive not only for the leading place, but also trying to provide more powerful and versatile software. Under the traditional software control, the machining can only complete the process of numerical controlled machine, the remaining work (i.e. taking parts out of the machine tool, then assorting, fixing position, etc.) can only be finished manually. The manual jobs caused many problems, such as low efficiency, unguaranteed quality and a potential safety hazard. Therefore, it's essential to develop a parts sorting system. Based on many years'computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) experiences, the software department of Rui Chao Company has abundant resources. But, without standard communication and interactive operations among those processes and heterogeneous platforms used, cause the low level of reusable software. Developers have to repeat lots of mature functions and arithmetic when developing a new system. It wastes a great deal of resource, the development lifecycle is too long, and the quality of the software is poor. So, it's very urgent to develop a parts sorting system by using those reliable modern technology to reuse the existing software resources.Firstly, the efficiency and quality problems caused by not reusable software are discussed. Then it specifies the necessity of developing the parts sorting system with COM technology. On this basis, the functions of parts sorting system are discussed, and the main process of importing data from CAM, taking out the parts, typing setting and parts laying are analyzed. Then by reviewing the framework built in hierarchical and modularized way, the detailed design of subsystems such as data management, taking out the parts, typing setting and laying strategy are designed. And the focus is the parts taken out and setting subsystems based on the COM technology's reuse. In conclusion, the accurate test data will verify the function and effect of the new applied system.
