Biodiversity is the one of major global environmental problems which is highly concerned by the international community for its closely related to human welfare. It not only provides food, drug resources for human, but also plays an irreplaceable role in the conservation of soil and water, the regulation of climate, the maintenance of the balance of natural system. However, in the past centuries (especially in the latest century years), the increasing of population and human activities caused serious damage to biodiversity. In 2002, the 6th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted a strategic plan "to achieve by 2010 a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss at the global, regional and national level as a contribution to poverty alleviation and to the benefit of all life on earth". In May 2010, the third edition of Global Biodiversity Outlook confirmed that the world had failed to meet its target to achieve a significant reduction in the rate of biodiversity loss by 2010. It also pointed out that the natural systems which protected and used for sustainable life on earth and supported the global economy, lives and livelihoods will collapse and deteriorate very quickly if we don't take the fundamental and innovative action. This paper focused on three aspects of biodiversity and regional development as below. (1) The analysis of relationship between biodiversity and regional development, especially the assessment of biodiversity for regional development and the effect of regional development to biodiversity. (2) The summarization of current the assessment of regional activities to biodiversity disturbance, as well as monitoring, observation network and evaluation indicator of biodiversity, (3) The descriptions of the status of biodiversity and action strategy in China, such as the analysis for the progress of 2010 targets in China and the problems and challenges in the future. Then, some suggestions and proposals on strategy are listed for biodiversity conservation on the basis of review of current works and local situation for the regional sustainable development.
