With the rapid expansion of urban scale and the accelerating pace of digitization, geographic information has been widely used. However, the responsibility of various departments is different which leads to various concerns towards geographic information. Then, the problems also appear:duplication and waste of geographic information resources. Based on this, a coding system of urban fundamental geographic information which can achieve the exchange and sharing of information is necessarily needed.Geocoding may have different meanings if being used in different areas. This paper studies the coding system of fundamental geographic information that used in city, such as:urban regionalism, urban transportation. Coding system mainly serves municipal management. This paper analyzes the research situation of geocoding both at home and abroad, and then discusses the concept and species of urban fundamental geographic information which is a basis for coding system and classifies. We classify the urban geographic information which is based on the classification method of information:linear classification method, surface classification method, line and plane hybrid classification method. This paper focuses on the differences in coding for geographic elements between< specifications for feature classification and codes of fundamental geographic information> and< Urban municipal supervision and management information system--Classification, coding and data requirements for urban managed components and events>, introduces it's coding structure for various presentations, points out that the expand elements for coding system of urban basic geographic information, puts forward the coding system of urban fundamental geographic information. The coding system classifies and encodes urban fundamental geographic information as comprehensive and systematic as possible in order to guide the production of basic data. The coding system classifies and encodes information in four-level and has 7-number.This paper takes urban regionalism, urban transportation as an example, introduces coding structures and methods, and ultimately forms the coding system for urban geographic information, then introduces the management of coding and the consistency of its properties.
