Some antibiotics have an inhibition effect on the growth and reproduction of some microbiology. The effect of antibiotics on the microbiology reflects the potency of antibiotics. Now there are two most widely used methods to determine the potency of the antibiotics at home or abroad. One method is called "GuanDie", the other is called "Paper Method". In fact, the two methods have the same principle. The key of the two methods is to measure the size of the bacteriostatic ring. The traditional method using calipers has some shortcomings, such as low precision, big subjectivity, complicated operations. So in this paper the purpose is to measure the size of the bacteriostatic ring automatically using computer. In this paper, how to measure the bacteriostatic ring using automatic measurement or manual measurement are discussed. The method basically achives the purpose of measurement automation. Comparing to the method using the calipers, there is very little diffirence between the results. Through continous improvement, this system can achieve the purpose of forming products ultimately. There is a broad space for development and prospects of the system.The purpose of the paper is to design an automatic measurement system of bacteriostatic ring. This system includes the design of the hardware and the software parts. The hardware part includes designing to control the stepper motor driver using the PCI2000 board. The motor takes the camera to move up and down in order to get clear picture of good perspective. The software part inlocudes designing to save the image, displaying the image, and the most important processing of the image. At last, the purpose of automatic measurement of bacteriostatic ring and the manual measurement using the mouse determining the edge of bacteriostatic ring is achieved. The other job is to save the information of the sample and the querying operation.The major problems solved in the system are as follows. Firstly, using the PCI2000 board to control the stepper motor with screw to take the camera to move is introduced. Here an algorithm to calculate the clarity of a picture on the basis of the whole picture is proposed. Secondly, the capture of video stream and the picture using OpenCV is achived. Besides, saving image, displaying image and processing image is achived. Image processing is most important, including color transforming, filtering both in the frequency domain and spatial domain. The effect of image processing decides the result of the measurement. Thirdly, detecting the edge of bacteriostatic ring using the mothod of Canny. After filtering, the purpose of detecting the circles is achieved. Forthly, the algorithm named template matching is applied to recognize character, and it has very high recognition rate for the neat character. Finally, saving the information of sample and the querying using Microsoft Access2003 is achieved. This method is fast, easy, steady comparing to human approach.
