Liao River, as one of seven major rivers in China, is known as the mother of Liaoning Province. In recent years, due to concentration of cities along both sides with heavy industrial structure and increased intensity of development, Liao River was under tremendous pressure on the environment. The degradation of ecological functions and services in Liao River ecosystem is so serious that it became one issue of"national restoration project of three rivers and three lakes". Therefore, in order to identify characteristics of structure and function in river ecosystem, dividing the water basin into different functional areas has important ecological significance. Aquatic ecological function regions at watershed scale can reflect the health of river ecosystems and its potential pressure, offer directed and strategic objectives for protection in the basin, achieve the harmonious development of man and nature.The third level aquatic eco-functional zoning in Liao River basin reflects the spatial heterogeneity of ecological functions. On the base of maintenance functions of river habitat, ecosystem diversity of ecological function, rare species and endemic species, this article evaluate the spatial heterogeneity in Liao River Basin.Based on the datas of water ecology in Liao River Basin form 2009 to 2010, the distribution of spatial heterogeneity of benthic algae and macrobenthos offer the basic data for evaluating maintenance functions of ecosystem diversity and endemic species; On the base of river map of Liao River Basin, thematic map of drainage density, river order and river gradient provide the basic data for evaluating maintenance functions of river habitat; The grade data and quantity of nature reserves in various urban areas in Liaoning Province offer the basic data for evaluating maintenance functions of rare species.On the base of the second level aquatic eco-functional regioning in Liao River basin, this work make use of Geostatistical Analyst to analyze the thematic map using ordinary kriging interpolation in ArcGIS 9.3 software. Besides, the matic maps is overlayed and analyzed in respect of spatial statistical using multi-function procession. Finally Liao River basin is divided into 33 Grade III regions. The result offers basis for making decision, establishs a set of ecological evaluation index system and methods for formulating the National Aquatic ecological function regions at watershed scale.
