Ecohydrology studies the hydrological mechanisms of ecological processes and patterns. A core content of ecohydrology is the study of ecohydrological processes under multiple temporal and spatial scales and under various environmental conditions. Water shortage was the restrictive factor of economic and ecological system development. Ecohydrology became one of the hot spot of ecology research. Spatial variation in water resources in Liao River basin was not equally distributed and temporal variation was drastic. The surface water capacity and underground water were less, so water shortage in Liao River basin was very serious. In our research, the research mainly discusses spatial and temporal variations in land use. vegetation, climate and hydrological and water quality. Using software Origin7.5 as data processing tool, this paper realized climate and hydrological data for processing. Using the geographic information system software ArcGIS9.3 as data analysis tool, this paper realized the spatial analysis of runoff, precipitation and temperature. Using the comprehensive pollution index method as data evaluating tool, this paper evaluated the water quality. This paper provided the rationale for studying of Water ecological functional region in Liao River Basin. The research results mainly include the following 3 aspects:(1) Spatial analysis of land use and vegetation coverage in Liao River basin. The farmland, forest land, meadow were main in Liao River Basin. It showed that there were forest land in the eastern and western and farmland in central plain area. Spatial variations of vegetation coverage were more obvious from the west to the east, especially in the central plain. The vegetation coverage in the middle of the region was lower than that in the sides of the region.(2) The spatial variation of air temperature showed slight variations from the north to the south with respect to their latitudes, and the temperature gradually increased. In contrast, variations were more obvious from the west to the east, especially in the central plain. The temperature in the middle of the region was higher than that in the sides of the region. Spatial difference of the precipitation showed slight variation from the north to the south, and the precipitation gradually increased. In contrast, variations were more obvious from the west to the east with respect to their longitudes. The trend analysis of time series revealed a significant increase of annual mean temperature and decrease of annual mean precipitation.(3) The runoff depth and its spatial variation showed variations from the north to the south with respect to their latitudes, and the runoff depth gradually increased. The variations were gradual increasing from the west to the east with respect to their longitudes. The trend analysis of time series revealed a significant decrease of annual mean runoff depth of Liao River Basin in Liaoning Province in two decades. The temporal variation in East of Liao River Basin was largely in agreement with the variation of Liao River Basin in Liaoning Province. The trend analysis of time series revealed a significant increase of annual mean runoff depth of in West of Liao River Basin in a decade. The variation of annual mean of the runoff depth was largely in agreement with the precipitation.
