| Container lines, set up to be engaged in the regular carriage of containerized cargo by sea, are special enterprises with sharp service characteristic. They provide invisible service, the movement of containerized cargo, instead of physical products. Comparing with other industries, their operational process boasts very notable characteristics, for instance, the fixed cost of service is high while the marginal cost is low; the service could be presold while could not be stored; the service capability is relatively fixed; the market competition is impetuous and instable etc.. Grounded on the practice of holds presale, I propose the model of optimizing holds presale. On the basis of the forecast of demands from consigner and the case-analysis of presale issues in European lines of CSCL. Evidently model matches with the practical situations, and could serve to the operations and decisions of shipping companies.The article, divided into five parts, will make studies and discussions on the issues of holds presale in European lines of CSCL.Part one: the container ships distinguished for large-scale. From the perspective of international trade transport, the tendency for large-scale container ships is rather apparent, and will play increasingly important role; Part two: the feature of container shipping market. This part mainly covers the basic characteristics of shipping market, the current situation of competition; Part three: the analysis of characteristics on European lines. It mainly covers the wide extension of mutual trade, the transport capability, the feature, the predominance and the marketing of European lines; Part four: the model of optimizing holds presale.
