China Joint-stock Commercial Bank Equity Structure

Since the first Joint-stock commercial bank was founded in 1986, there are 13 nationwide joint-stock banks and 115 city commercial banks till now. The joint-stock bank is a form of enterprise that has clear property; its foundation introduces competitive mechanism and promotes deepening the financial reform. The core of modern commercial bank establishment is to consummate corporation governance structure, and equity ownership structure is the key factor of governance arrangement.There are many theoretical definitions on equity ownership structure. Generally speaking, equity ownership structure means the proportion of every stockholder's equity in total corporation shareholding and the relationship between stockholder and enterprise. Researching on equity ownership structure is the key to solve principle-agent problem between board of directors and shareholders. As the base of the corporation governance system, equity ownership structure determines corporation domination structure and internal governance operation, then influences efficiency of corporation governance through internal governance.In this paper, we first make a literature on relationship of equity ownership structure and corporation performance. It turns out that because of different opinions, it's difficult to tell how equity ownership structure influences corporation performance. We should consider the equity ownership structure's characteristic and other factors when we do research on joint-stock commercial bank's equity ownership structure.In chapter two, we take annual reports of 12 joint-stock commercial banks to analyze their common characteristic and problems.
