China's Provincial Regional Construction Industry International Competitiveness

Research on international competitiveness of industry has been a very popular economic topic today, and many countries have evaluated their conditions of international competitiveness of industry by all sorts of methods. Construction industry plays an important role in national economy in China. Because of imbalance of economic development in different areas, their international competitiveness of construction industry also exists for differences. This paper uses evaluation of labor productivities to research international competitiveness of construction industries in our regions based on provincial level for analyzing causes for differences and make countermeasures for reducing differences!This paper chooses construction industries in 31 provinces, cities directly under the Central Government and municipalities as research objects, and utilizes labor productivities for the year of 1995 to 2001 from 《China Statistical Yearbook》 and national bureau of statistics of China website as research basis. We set up an econometrics model by index evaluation and empirical analysis, and apply panel data model to analyze labor productivities of construction industry in our regions based on provincial level and their factors for judging size of international competitiveness of construction industries in our regions based on provincial level.The conclusions indicate that there are some differences compared with actual competitiveness but most in accordance with their facts as a result of selected factors when evaluating international competitiveness of construction industries in our regions based on provincial level by labor productivity index. Finally, we analyze differences of international competitiveness of construction industries and their reasons and give advice by dividing them into eastern, middle and western regions.
