On The Port And Industrial Clusters

With the development of Chinese economics and the globalization, the port industry of China grows at full speed, for example, Shanghai and Shenzhen have become the world-class port. At the same time, the competition in the port industry increases day by day. The mind only focuses on the operation ability can not accommodate the market environment.The cluster theories, which start from the competition capacity study, is appreciated by the government, industry and the firms. The theory is usually used to analyze the manufacture industry, but the service industry also has the trend and characteristics of cluster. In this paper, the cluster phenomenon of the port and the port-related industry is explored about the situation of the port industry.This thesis, applying the cluster theory, deals with the port cluster and the competitiveness of the port cluster, and studies its theories and solutions. This paper is structured as follows.In the first section, a short overview about the cluster theory is provided. The port cluster theory is summarized, which establish the theoretical foundation of this thesis.The existence and characteristics of the port cluster is discussed. The possibility of using the cluster theory to analyze the port is described, and the concept of the port cluster is presented. The characteristics of the port cluster, which including its structure, industry and position distribution, is discussed.In section two, the analysis of the formation mechanism is given. The development and trend of the port cluster are discussed. The competitive advantage of the port-proximate industries cluster, which is the extension of the port cluster, is discussedIn section three, the competitiveness of port cluster is discussed. The system of the competitive advantage of port cluster is established by analyzing how the port cluster acquires the competitive advantage, which has four factors. The function of the leader firm in port cluster is presented. The methods to promote the competitiveness of port cluster in China are given.In section four, two cases are given to show the application of the theory and methods, which include Shanghai port and marine service cluster and Shanghai Lingang city. The structure of Shanghai port and marine service cluster is studied.Applying the SWOT analysis and compare with the other cluster, the estimation on Shanghai port and marine service cluster is given. How to establish the cluster and how to choose the industries are discussed with its condition.This thesis applies the theories and methods in the Regional Economics, Economic Geography and Management to study the port cluster. It provides some valuable theoretical guidance and methods to the establishment of port cluster and the promotion of its competitiveness.
