Vector sensor array have been the subject of intensive study in array signal processing due to its good performance. This dissertation focus on the study of Distributed Electromagnetic Component sensor Array (DEMCA), including deep-through theory analysis and an experiment to measure the direction of arrival (DOA) based a kind of DEMCA. DEMCA consists of an array of spatially distributed electric and magnetic component sensors, which have different response corresponding to different polarization of incoming signal.We study the array from DOA estimation algorithm and system performance separately at the second part of the dissertation. On the aspects of DOA estimation algorithm, we present the extension of Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) to DEMCA. Then, make a conclusion of other direction finding algorithms for DEMCA, including Common Beamformer method (CBF) and Minmum Variance Method (MVM). At last we propose an ESPRIT-like DOA algorithm based on cumulants. Each method is demonstrated by computer simulations in its efficiency. On the other hand, the Cram?r-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for DEMCA is derived to show its huge advantages in parameter estimation. At last, we make a conclusion about DEMCA and scalar array in DOA estimation.At the third part of the dissertation, we investigate the issue of array calibration that is common in actual DOA system. Different calibration methods are used to solve different kinds of array perturbations, including array manifold storage and interpolation calibration method, two different kinds of off-line calibration methods using a source in known locations and an array self-calibration method. Computer simulations show the efficiency of different calibration methods.In the following part, an experimental system based on DEMCA is introduced. We give the detail information about the progress of the experiment and discuss the corresponding results. This experiment provide good reference to further research and practice of DEMCA as well as show the ability to measure the source DOA in real environment. At last, we derive the Incoherent Signal-subspace Method (ISM) for wideband signal DOA based on DEMCA. ISM verifies that DEMCA can apply to wideband situation which lead to border application value and prospect in both military and civil areas.So it outperforms the common scalar sensor array due to its polarization sensitive. Besides, it is easier to practice in real circumstance compared to vector sensor array due to its distributed structure.
