Transport layer plays an important role in the architecture of the network, which is responsible for end to end of data transmission. TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) are two common transport-layer protocols, which has a wide range of applications in the IP network.They provide a reliable end to end transmission services for the application layer.Wireless mobile ad hoc networks (Mobile Ad hoc Networks, called MANET) is a self-organization network without infrastructure support by wireless nodes. Compared with wired IP networks,the wireless mobile ad hoc networks(MANETs) become much more unreliable,as the network topology changes frequently due to the mobility of the node, which makes TCP and SCTP much more important.This paper introduces TCP and SCTP first, and then interprets the research of the TCP and SCTP protocol improvements over wireless mobile ad hoc networks . The design of transport layer based on SCTP has been introduced, using SCTP basic functions of multi-homing and multi-streaming to provide efficient and reliable transport service for wireless mobile ad hoc networks.Reliability means SCTP can react quickly to switch to the backup path when the primary path failure, which is known as failover mechanism using the muti-homing function of SCTP. In this paper, three proposals to improve the SCTP failover mechanism has been introduced, namely: Timeout Query Routing, Enable-Timeout Query Routing, Explicit Routing Failure Notification, using routing information of the network layer to make a decision whether switch to the backup path or not. High Efficient means of data can be quickly transmitted from the source to the destination, which can be provided by the following two aspects: Firstly, using SCTP's multi-streaming to provide Quality Of Service for different data flows; secondly, selecting the best path for high priority data flows by using SCTP multi-homing function.Finally, through simulation the improvement of SCTP failover mechanism which take full advantage of SCTP multi-homing function has been verified. When a path to the primary ip address is broken,it can switch to the backup path quickly, which can provide a reliable guarantee for the data transmission in the wireless mobile ad hoc networks. Simulation results show that Explicit Routing Failure Notification (ERFN) proposal reduced the failover time obviously.
