Wireless sensor network(WSN) is a new type of ad hoc network which has huge potential in wide range of applications including military detection, environment monitoring, medical inspection, space exploration etc. MIMO technology not only can improve the channel capacity by the spatial multiplexing,but also can improve the reliability of wireless link and reduce the energy consumption of communication by diversity gain which can against the radio channel fading.The collaborative MIMO system in wireless sensor network with small power consumption and fast transmission characteristics can reduce network energy consumption and prolong the network survival time. Clustering algorithm is the key step to implementation of the cooperative MIMO system and impact of network power performance. When the traditional clustering algorithms in wireless sensor networks can not meet the needs of collaborative MIMO applications, and the current cooperative MIMO-based clustering algorithm is still relatively weak, this paper is going to analyze and address the problem in depth.This article describes the wireless sensor network research background and research directions, compare and analyse a wide range of traditional wireless sensor network clustering algorithm, review development process and basic principle of MIMO technology, collaborative MIMO technology, and introduce a wide range of cooperative MIMO system. Through derivation of fixed-rate MIMO, burst rate of MIMO, single-hop collaborative MIMO and cooperative MIMO multi-hop energy consumption model, this paper obtained the distance threshold for cooperative MIMO system, and the solutions to find the optimal number of hops and optimal cooperative transmit node. With the optimal parameters and the distance threshold, aiming at hierarchical network topology, this paper designed a clustering algorithm called the best cooperative MIMO multi-hop clustering algorithm(BCMC) for multi-hop cooperative MIMO technology in wireless sensor networks.In BCMC, it alternates the wireless sensor network node to cluster head node through the wheels and cycles, zone the wireless sensor networks through the distance prediction and optimal parameters estimate, divide cluster through the cluster head rate optimization and cluster head election, achieve the long-distance data transmission through cooperative node selection and multi-hop MIMO communications. The Matlab simulation and OPNET network simulation show that the BCMC overcome the uneven distribution, different cluster range and other shortcomings in traditional clustering algorithms, obtain better clustering distribution and balance, lower communication energy consumption, longer life cycle of the network which is more suitable for collaborative MIMO technology use in wireless sensor networks.
