The augmented reality is a kind of technology that combines the reality environment and the virtual image together at the same time. Compared with the virtual reality, which places user into a complete artificial world builded by computer vision technology, the augmented reality adds some additional information to the real scene: usually overlaying the related computer graphics or additional text information on the image of the environment around users to complete visual navigation or task instructions.As the serious lack of portability, the augmented reality applications on the desktop computer are limited largely. However, the rapid development of embedded mobile devices, and the significantly improved multimedia computing ability of the stand-alone devices have laid a good foundation for the implementation of embedded augmented reality system, as well as provided a broad platform for related application and promotion. It is currently a popular and difficult research topic to solve the problem of building the cross-platform augmented reality system efficiently just with the limited computing resources of the embedded mobile devices.In this paper, we carried out the research of augmented reality on the embedded experimental platform MINI2440. We introduced the configuration of development environment, and designed the new architecture of embedded augmented reality system based on the characteristics of the embedded platform. We discussed the whole process of the augmented reality implementation, including image capturing, pose tracking, 3D rendering and other key issues, and finally developed the marker-based embedded augmented reality system with few related application testing.
