The liquid crystal was first found by an Austria botanist in 1888. It has become a flourishing industry by now. The liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are getting more and more popular because of its good definition, low energy cost and small volume. With the development of liquid crystal industry, more and more people increase the investment on it.The demand of LCD-TVs rises rapidly in recent years. Compared with other modes of LCD, Multi-domain vertical alignment (MVA) mode displays has a high contrast ratio and wide viewing angle. However, during the fabrication of MVA-LCDs, a special and high cost protrusion is needed to assure the alignment of the liquid crystal molecule. How to avoid this protrusion becomes many researchers' problem.A new mode called amplified intrinsic fringe field (AIFF) MVA mode was invented to solve this problem. Because of its special structure, this mode LCDs will not need this protrusion and even has better contrast ratio and viewing angle than common MVA mode LCDs. During the research of this mode LCDs, pixel layout can influence its characteristic.Pixel layout includes pixel size and the distance size between pixels. The AIFF MVA mode liquid crystal cell (LC cell) is needed to make out to study how the pixel layout influences the characteristic. After the research of lithography technology and LC cell making technology, a series with different pixel layout LC cells are made. Though the observation and the measurement of these LC cells'optical texture and electro-optical character, some results can be found out.Based on experiments and discussions, computer simulation technology is also introduced in related calculation. The thesis selected relatively simple simulation approach of iterative difference method to analyze the director distribution of liquid crystal molecules, based on which the transmittance of liquid crystal devices is calculated via the Jones matrix method. The result matches the experiments discussion and also further explains the influence of the pixel layout on AIFF MVA mode LCDs.In summary, this thesis introduces a new MVA mode LCDs and studies the pixel layout influence on its characteristic. This research work involves electrode lithography technology, LC cell making technology, LC cell driving method, the estimate of LC cell electro-optical characteristic and computer simulation. This contributes the people's understandings of AIFF MVA mode LCDs and some reference value for LCD pixel design works.
