The metropolitan area network (MAN) is a multi-media communication network of high-bandwidth, multi-function and multi-service access, which is based on IP and ATM-based telecommunications technology, to fiber-optic transmission as a medium, and collects data, voice and video services in one. It can meet the increasingly strong demands of governments, finance and insurance, schools, companies and other organizations to high-speed, high-quality data communication services, particularly with the rapid development of Internet subscribers of broadband high-speed Internet access. MAC layer switch in the conversion feature is the nature of MAN and scalability of the guarantee. At present, switch on the widespread use of the MAC layer is spanning tree protocol (STP)-based exchange. This dissertation firstly analyzed the basic structure of existing IP network level and several kinds of metropolitan area network, introduced the key problems of WAN composed by switchboards, as well as the corresponding theories principle and evolution processes of spanning tree protocol; then discussed the detailed realization of fast spanning tree protocol (RSTP). Besides, further developments of the STP protocols are discussed. The spanning tree protocol is a two-level management protocol, which eliminates the two level ring of network by selectively blocking redundant links and simultaneously had the link backup functions. Along with the evolution of network, STP is continually developed as well as the other protocols. Therefore, the Spanning Tree Protocol in the dissertation is not only the STP protocol defined in IEEE802.1D in particular, but also including the improved spanning tree protocols based on STP, such as RSTP, MSTP, and so on.
