H.264/AVC is newest video coding standard of the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group. H.264 is composed of many advanced video coding techniques, and it can save approximately a 50% bitrate for equivalent perceptual quality relative to the existing standards. Due to the advanced compression performance and the "network friendly" nature, H.264 will be adopted over a broad variety of applications such as video telephone, video conference, remote monitor, 3G communication, storage and so on. Although H.264 has very excellent performance, the high computational complexity has become the bottleneck for the implementation of H.264 encoder in engineering, especially in real time video field. Therefore, it is worth researching on H.264 video coding algorithms and its realization with DSP.This thesis was comprised of the research on coding algorithms and realization of encoder with DSP, and the main works were listed as follows.In order to resolve the high computation complexity in inter-mode decision, a novel fast algorithm was proposed. The proposed algorithm utilized the adoption information of SKIP mode in sequences and high correlation of coding modes between spatio-temporal adjacent macroblocks and current macroblock. The proposed algorithm reduces the range of candidate modes and uses thresholds to heighten precision of prediction. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can reduce calculation complexity significantly, with negligible small picture quality degradation and slight bitrate increase.On the basis of analysis on the coding flow of H.264, the transplant of the H.264 baseline profile encoder from PC to DSP was fulfilled firstly. Then several implementation techniques for optimization were presented based on the characteristics of DM642 chip. The H.264 Baseline Profile encoder is finally real-time implemented based on DM642 platform. The testing results demonstrate that encoder has sped up remarkably after optimization.
