With the rapid development of network technology and the officialsupport for game industry the industry of online games is developing prosperously. Online games also have the trend to become more and more complex, ever since the simple online games that support a group of players to today's massive multiplayer on-line games which let large numbers of players interact in a visual online world simultaneously.Several companies such as Perfect World and Giant are professional in developing online games, but they regard the technologies as commercial secret. Server side is very important for online games. A design of a server side of online games is described in this thesis.First, the definition and the sorts of online games aresummarized, and also the development status quo and the trend of online games are introduced. The main technologies of online games and the architecture of online games are discussed. On purpose to design a server side of online games, we first do some research of the related technologies, containing network communication, multiple thread, serialization and finite state machine.A design of server side of online games is described in this thesis.We give the software architecture design at first. On this base, communication model , multi-thread model, game protocol and finite state machine are analyzed and designed respectively. How to realize the completion I/O model and the design of packet of game data are introduced in detail.In the final, we summarize and evaluate the full text, then prospect the follow-up work and research.As being a popular field in recent years,network game is worthy of studying and researching harder.The server side designee discussed in this thesis has significant academic and commercial essentiality.
