In speech communication the speakers are often interfered by the background noise. It's more obvious in some particular fields, for example in the factory, airport and some military fields. The intensity of the background noise might terribly influence the communication effect even worse to disable it. The research on the real time speech enhancement is based on the actual intense noise circumstance. Through the implementation of the algorithms on the software and hardware system, it could reduce the background noise and upgrade the understandability of the speech as to achieve the effect of speech enhancement.To guarantee the real-time of the processing, the real time speech enhancement has a high requirement about the processing ability of the hardware system, and the requirement is developing fast with the development of the process technology. Recently, DSP(Digital Signal Processor)and its platform has been well developed so that the real-time speech enhancement could be implemented well on the hardware system and got a good application in various fields.In this paper firstly introduced some classic speech enhancement algorithms, and compared and anal sized their excellence and weakness. Author made some improvements on these algorithms and introduced a modified spectral suppression algorithm based on voice activity detector. This algorithm is easy to be implemented real-time on the hardware system and could satisfy the demands of real time speech enhancement and validated its effect through simulation.The paper introduced the hardware and software system based on the TMS320VC5509A, the chips and system, the initialization software modules ,and the implementation of the algorithm. The test showed that this system could have a good effect on the reduction of the background noise and get a better understanding of the speech so as to achieve the goal of speech enhancement.
