In recent years, radar has been widely used in the military, meteorology, agriculture and zoology etc. Since the radar is in a complex background environment and will be involved in varieties clutters and interferences, clutter suppression has become an important research content in the field of radar so as to improve the radar target detection probability from the noise background. Studying the clutter suppression needs a realistic radar clutter environment, and many theories and methods have been advanced to simulate and suppress the radar clutters. Space-time adaptive signal processing (STAP) technology is one of useful tool for clutter suppression and it can achieve a good detection probability in airborne radar. Generalized maximum likelihood ratio detection algorithm (GLR) is a typical method of space-time adaptive signal processing. Based on airborne radar clutters and the clutter suppression, our work can be summarized as follows:(1) We fully analyzed the clutters and interferences which the radar is faced, and discussed their characteristics, Especially analyzed the four universal clutter models.(2) We summarized the main methods of airborne radar clutter suppression and analyzed their performance and characteristics.(3) In order to simulate the realistic radar clutter, we used Zero Memory Non-linear method to simulate Rayleigh, Log-normal, K, and Weibull clutters, and brought up a method which extends the one-dimensional sequence to two-dimensional sequence. Our results show that the simulation peak by two-dimensional method can move accurately following the Doppler frequency.(4)We studied the realization of the generalized maximum likelihood ratio detection algorithm (GLR), Using the ground clutter generated by frequency extending, In our software simulation we verified the space-time adaptive signal processing is a good method in the clutter suppression. The clutter generated by frequency extending has a certain practical value.
