With the rapid development of computer and communication technology, digital image information, as one of the most important information, is used widely. But the amount of data in raw digital images is big. If the image data couldn't be compressed efficiently, it will not meet the needs of high speed transmission and efficient storage nowadays. The coding technologies of fractal compression and wavelet transform are new image compression in recent years. People pay more attention to the advantage of combining the two methods.Fractal technology and wavelet technology were discussed in this paper. An image coding method based on the optimum combination of fractal image compression technology and SPIHT was proposed. The low-frequency area was fractal coded based on entropy to shorten coding time. High-frequency ones which included detail information of image were coded by SPIHT to improve the PSNR of the reconstructed image. Experiment showed that this new method can improve the speed of coding as well as the quality of the reconstructed image.
